TED is the infamous idea-sharing platform that has given ideas and issues from every corner of the world a global stage. TEDxStJohns is the largest TEDx event in Atlantic Canada. On June 2, 2018 Kimberly Churchill gave a TED talk about her son Carter, his struggles within education in Kindergarten and fighting to obtain access to his first language, ASL. Kimberly encourages everyone to become more proactive within their schools and communities to learn basic sign language so that children like her son Carter do not feel socially isolated ever again. It is also important to note that leading up to this public event Kimberly advocated and pushed for ASL interpreters as accessibility is vital for inclusion and was the theme to Kimberly's talk. TEDxStJohns was the first to offer full ASL interpretation at this event and continues to offer this at all of their events since.
